Scope and Contents

Robert Cadell (1788-1849) was the partner of Archibald Constable, and, after the dissolution of that partnership in 1825, the sole publisher of Walter Scott's novels. His papers reflect his personal and business relations with Scott and other authors, as well as his family affairs.

Scope and Contents The Blairs and Fothringhams were connected by marriage, and the Earl of Perth had dealings with the Blairs. Included are a draft of the deed of 1819 selling the copyright of Scott`s novels and poems to Constable, and a letter of John Gibson Lockhart to Archibald Constable concerning his proposal for a Scott edition of Shakespeare, 1823.
